Reading, UK – 26th October 2007: Pro-Bel has once again proved its ability to deliver industry-leading technology to a tight schedule with the news that Danmarks Radio, the Danish state broadcaster, has gone on the air with Morpheus Automation within two months of signing the contract.
DR began a major process to rationalise its technologies and premises some years ago. The overall aim was to unite radio, television and new media playout on one site, with an integrated tapeless workflow throughout.
The new building – DR Byen, based just outside Copenhagen – consolidates the operations of 12 formerly separate sites, and contains studios, production facilities, delivery systems and a comprehensive multimedia news area, which together serve all of DR’s outputs across radio, TV and new media. There is also a concert hall.
The vision for the playout centre was to create one facility using one common platform operated by common media operators. The aim of achieving one common platform could not be met because the current playout solutions for TV and radio do not allow this. Pro-Bel was called into the project when this was realised. The rest of the vision has been implemented as planned, including the key design criterion of a single IP network for all traffic within the building. A number of disparate media areas are united in the use of a central media archive that serves the entire technical architecture.
“Pro-Bel reacted very positively and very quickly when our initial plans had to be altered at such a late stage,” says Lars Sorner, Senior Project Manager, DR TES Technology Project. “The company analysed and understood our situation accurately, and provided us with solutions that worked.”
Danmarks Radio purchased a four-channel Morpheus system – currently running DR-1 and DR-2.
“We ordered Morpheus and then had it up and running within three weeks. There were some very impressive people from Pro-Bel who knew exactly what they were doing. We were and are very impressed,” concludes Sorner.
DR is anticipating a significant growth in its TV output, as well as in its considerable radio line-up (more than 40 channels already spread across FM, DAB and streaming) and in its online services.
“Danmarks Radio is to be congratulated for its vision and forward thinking,” says Graham Pitman, Pro-Bel’s Group Chief Executive. “We are pleased that we were given the opportunity of contributing our expertise to the success of this project. We greatly look forward to the prospect of working with DR in the future.”
