Reading, UK – 12th October 2006: WCNY, a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) station based in Syracuse, NY, has installed a range of Pro-Bel routing and router control technology to sit at the heart of its new digital infrastructure. The deal was overseen by Pro-Bel partner NNY, Inc, which serves the North Eastern US.
The overall project involved moving the station from its existing analog technology to a total digital solution – with HD capabilities included - providing a path to the future. Joe Ebert, Sales Executive with NNY, explains that in this instance WCNY did not engage the services of a systems integrator. He says, “They used the expertise of their own staff and relied on the close cooperation of both vendors and equipment manufacturers to provide the technical support they needed.”
WCNY has installed two Sirius routers – one video and one audio. The first – using a 128 x 128 frame – is equipped 32 x 32 analog, 64 x 64 SDV and 32 x 32 HD. Sirius’ inherent flexibility allows for onboard A/D and D/A signal conversion. The audio router – a Sirius 256 x 256 – is fitted 128 x 128 balanced synchronous AES and 64 x 64 stereo analog. In addition, WCNY has also installed a Freeway RS-422 router with a 32 x 32 timecode card. Pro-Bel’s Aurora router control is being used as well as variety of control panels.
The new equipment allows the station to achieve its aim of five on-air channels. Beyond the television side, WCNY is also home to the local PBS radio station. Audio for the station is configured through audio frame of the Pro-Bel router.
John Duffy, Vice President, Technology and Operations with WCNY, explains why the Pro-Bel technology was chosen, “The ability to combine SD and HD in the same frame was very important in our decision to use to Pro-Bel technology at the heart of our digital solution. We were also impressed with the length of the warranty on offer – 10 years.”
“Pro-Bel has worked with a variety of broadcasters across the US on projects similar to this and we are very pleased that our technology is being so widely installed. We always listen to our customers and have worked consistently on the flexible Sirius router range to satisfy the precise needs of broadcasters and facilities across the spectrum,” concludes Neil Maycock, President, Pro-Bel US.
